In Montessori philosophy, Grace and Courtesy is about much more than simply saying “please” and “thank you.” It is a foundational part of the classroom, helping children learn how to move through the world with respect, awareness, and care for others.

A child thoughtfully rolls their work mat and returns it to its place, preparing the environment for another to use
Through intentional lessons and daily practice, children learn how to greet one another, take turns, listen, offer help, and resolve conflicts peacefully. These small, meaningful interactions build a strong sense of empathy and social understanding. Rather than being told what to do, children are shown how to act with kindness and provided opportunities to practice it in real situations.

Elementary and Middle School students prepared and shared a meal, embodying Grace and Courtesy by working together
Grace and Courtesy supports the development of the whole child: socially, emotionally, and academically. When children feel confident in how to interact with others, they are better able to focus, collaborate, and fully engage in their learning.
In this way, Grace and Courtesy go far beyond good manners. It supports the development of children who move through the world with empathy and respect.
